Africa Link update - February 2007

Africa Link moving on

At the start of 2007 Africa Link has re-evaluated its programme of activities. It is aiming to expand its work in Malawi. With greater resources, it is looking to focus in on the key social development issues which exist in the country. It is also looking at how it can further influence a holistic approach to development in the country.

Tim and Nicola (+kids) and friend Matt Levett are visiting Malawi over the Easter period. The aims of the visit are

  • To talk to those involved in the projects we have supported over the last year
  • To disburse a further £10,000 raised over the last year.
  • To look to commit to further programmes in 2007 with Orphans and HIV/AIDS
  • To consider how to expand into economic development programmes

There are some key develops we wish to make in 2007. We are aware of 2 other orphanages which are just at the beginning of their work in and around Lilongwe . We will be meeting with those who are setting up these orphanages with a view to supporting a part of their work The 2 have different approaches to orphan care. The first is a traditional project in that they are wanting to build orphan care houses and a school. They have a very good project already in place and are looking to expand it and focus a lot on self sustainability through agriculture. It is called Adziwa. The second is close to the lake shore. Kindle Orphan Outreach focuses on keeping the children in the community and supporting the community and assisting in looking after and feeding the orphans. They are also looking at building a school in the Nanjoka area.

Finally we want to thank Wendover Junior school for their recent pledge to raise funds for Africa Link through their feeding the 5000 programme.

Our thanks go to Chris Twelftree for designing and updating the website – thanks Chris!

Look out for further information following our return in April
